About the tests...A layman's interpretation
-
Basis Weight
- Weight of the garment per square yard (also 63 gram metric)
-
Tensile Strength (Grab)
- Pulling the material from each end - both Cross Direction (CD) and Machine Direction (MD) - how many pounds of force does it take to rip open
-
Trapezoidal Tear
- Once ripped, how many pounds of force it takes to keep ripping
-
Ball Burst
- How many pounds of pressure it takes to "poke through" the garment
-
Mocon Breathability
- Breathability as measure by moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) by Mocon, Inc permatran-w. The measurement is grams per square meter. The higher the number the better the garment breathes.
-
Air Permeability
- Actual Air Flow through the garment - the higher the number, the less barrier protection
-
Hydro-Head
- Measures the garment's resistance to hydrostatic water pressure (i.e. splash protection - greater than 500 is very good
-
Flammability
- The material is tested by holding a swatch on a 45 degree angleand igniting it. If the material takes longer than 4 seconds to burn it is considered Class 1. The garment has no unusual burning characteristics
